Energy Bars

Good afternoon everyone!

I am a member of Sparkpeople.com and was browsing their articles this morning and came across this:

Edible Energy Bars

It’s a really interesting article, considering so many of us in the blog world (myself included) use protein or energy bars to re-fuel after a workout, as fuel for a workout, or just as a convenient, portable snack.  The article makes a good point stating that as pre-workout fuel,

“It is best to avoid protein, fat, fiber and sugar alcohols, all of which can delay the emptying time of the stomach and slow digestion, causing cramps and sluggish energy levels. Energy bars are usually too high in protein, fat, fiber, and possibly sugar alcohols to be used for pre-exercise nourishment”

This makes a lot of sense.  Are we better off choosing more “whole” foods as pre and post workout snacks?

What do you all think?

I also found this tip of the day on Sparkpeople’s website:

“Watch the clock. You body can only absorb about 500 mg of calcium (about half your daily requirement) at one time. For best results, eat calcium-rich foods and supplements throughout the day-not in one sitting.”

Have a great afternoon bloggies!! 🙂

I agree. I think you have to look carefully at the ingredient list of bars. They often times have lots of sugar and when they don’t it’s usually because sugar alcohols are included. I have to be careful because sugar alcohols tend to really hurt my stomach. I try to eat whole foods rather than bars, but they are convenient and tasty too. Prime example – LARABARS. 🙂

Yeah Larabars are definitely an exception..I mean you don’t get much more natural in a bar than that haha. Whole foods in a bar. I think companies need to come out with more bars with that concept 🙂
